Building consents hit new low

Consents for new homes hit a new six-year low in the year to November.

Statistics NZ figures show 33,609 building consents were issued, down from 38,209, or 12 per cent from November 2023 and down from 50,209, or 33.1 per cent, in the 2022 November year. The decline has affected all dwelling types, with consents for new apartments down 58.8 per cent over the past two years, followed by retirement village units, down 41.7 per cent, townhouses and home units, down 32.2 per cent and stand-alone houses, down 27.6 per cent. It is estimated the total value of new residential work for the November year is $15.33 billon, down 24.9 per cent, compared to two years ago.
